While fighting a 1,100 acre fire in the Gaviota area, he was overrun by fire causing fatal injuries.

District Fire Warden

While making a left hand turn from Hollister Avenue to Highway 101 at Elwood, he apparently lost control of Engine #203 and plunged down the 125-foot embankment causing fatal injuries.


John Worley

Heavy Equipment Operator

While operating a bulldozer during a 600-acre fire near Los Alamos, he jumped from the bulldozer and broke his leg as the fire overran him. He died ten days later at the Los Angeles County General Hospital with burns over 70% of his body.

Battalion Chief

While attending a Fire Foresters and Fire Wardens conference at Roosevelt Camp in Idyllwild, California, he suffered a heart attack.


Mark F. Common

February 17, 1970 Age 26

Fire Engineer

While on duty at the Los Alamos Fire Station, he suffered a heart attack. Fellow firefighters performed CPR, but were unable to revive him.
